I want to tell you about two books I just finished reading. Both of them are Bluebonnet nominated books.
The first book is The Luck of the Loch Ness Monster: A Tale of Picky Eating, by A.W. Flaherty, illustrated by Scott Magoon. This is a funny picture book about a little girl who tosses her oatmeal overboard while she is traveling on an ocean liner to Scotland. A small worm in the ocean eats the oatmeal and grows big and strong–and eventually ends up in the famous lake in Scotland. This explanation of the legend of Loch Ness is funny and has great pictures. Be sure to check out the last page of the book “The Science of it All,” because it shares some interesting facts about tastebuds. Too cool!
The second book I want to recommend is Surprises According to Humphrey, by Betty G. Birney. This book is the latest in a series of Humphrey adventures…but it’s the first one I’ve read. I’m so glad this book was nominated for Bluebonnet so now I know about the other Humphrey books–this little classroom hamster has some great adventures! Humphrey tries to understand all that is going on with his fellow classmates–the students of Mrs. Brisbane’s class–it’s difficult when he is in a cage on the classroom counter. But Humphrey does his best to fit in with all of the class routines. He even has his own personal dictionary that he adds entries to as each chapter comes to a close. In this book, Humphrey encounters many surprises–including what he thinks is an alien from outer space, a dangerous run-in with a cat and also an unsqueakable surprise that he hopes won’t take place. Humphrey gets busy trying to solve this latest problem for all of his classmates and Longfellow School. What a silly and clever little hamster!
